With more than 700,000 applications in the App Store and 675,000 on Google Play, it can be a daunting task to discover new apps. That’s where I hopefully come in. Once a month, I’m going to profile three newer apps that I think are either really awesome, useful or have some amazing feature. Or, a combination of all three. Here’s the first roundup.
Zeebox
For those who don’t know, I’m a bit of a TV and movie fanatic. Up until recently, I primarily only used Twitter as my second-screen app. I’ve tried Getglue, IntoNow, Miso, and a few others. None of them stuck. They didn’t really give me anything that compelling or special. A few of these apps were downright clunky to use.
Zeebox, on the other hand, is different. It has a super-clean, easy to use interface. It’s not a ground breaking concept since it essentially just combines old-school TV channel guides with social commentary (from their app, Facebook, Twitter, etc.). But, it does it in a way where it’s super easy and fun to use.
Circa
Hands down, the cleanest news app I’ve seen to date. Circa, which has it’s own editorial staff, gives you the day’s news in bite-size readable chunks. You can skim and pick up the news while you are on-the-go.
Timehop
Timehop is a great example of a company that morphed a super cool daily email into a content-rich, amazing app experience. In short, it tells you what you and your friends posted about that day a year ago.

Thank you for posting these great app ideas, Jessica. I just won a Nexus 7 in an employee incentive contest at DISH, and now I need a few good apps to put on it. All 3 of these apps sound awesome, and I will try them all out, but Zeebox sounds the most interesting. Like you, I love TV and movies, and it sounds like Zeebox might be a good companion app to my favorite app. It’s called DISH Remote Access, and I can use it to stream live TV, as well as recordings from my DVR. . I probably shouldn’t be using it at work, but a little TV really helps those late night hours pass by. Take a look at it if you get a chance; let us know what you think.
